Archaeologists specified the age of petroglyphs on the Kola Peninsula

Employees of the Kola archeological expedition of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences confirmed the age of the rock paintings at Kanozero – they are really 6000 years old.

In the course of the work, the archaeological expedition discovered the tools that these drawings were made of. In addition, among the finds of archeologists are fragments of ceramic products, scraps of mica and other artifacts, which can reliably confirm the original hypothesis of scientists about the age of the discovered petroglyphs of Kanozero.

“These are the oldest of the rock paintings discovered by archaeologists on the Kola Peninsula,” Vladimir Perevalov, director of the Petroglyph Kanozer Museum, told TASS. – And the skeletons of mica, found by scientists, could appear in the process of knocking out petroglyphs on the rocks.

Archaeological excavations on the island of Kamenny are carried out not for the first year. Petroglyphs Kanozera are among the five largest monuments of the Neolithic age in the world. The complex of petroglyphs found in the Kanozero area in the south-east of the Murmansk region includes about 1200 images of animals, people, hunting and fishing scenes, as well as solar and lunar symbols.
