Polar Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (PINRO) – the oldest scientific institution of the northern region of Russia, the successor Floating Marine Research Institute, established by the Decree of VI Lenin in March 1921, which bears the honorary name of Academician NM 1935 Knipovich, founder of fisheries science in the Russian North.

The main task of the team of scientists of the Institute of Polar – annual study values the total allowable catch of commercial fish, invertebrates, algae and mammals. The main scientific focus on cod, haddock, capelin, herring, Greenland halibut, Kamchatka crab Barents Sea population, sёmge. The area of responsibility of the Institute – the Kara, Barents, White, Norwegian, Greenland Sea, the water of the Northwest Atlantic, as well as freshwater ponds Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions, the Komi Republic, Nenets Autonomous District.
