The reserve was founded July 16, 1992 and is unique in the specially protected natural territory. It is located in the extreme north-west of Russia in the Pechenga area of the Murmansk region. Nature of the land extraordinarily beautiful, and the history of different events wealth. The protected area is located in the Paz River valley on its right bank. The river originates from Lake Inari in Finland and flows through Russia, and flows into the Barents Sea in Norway already. In the middle reaches it passes between Norway and Russia, separating the two states on the fairway. Here along the Norwegian-Russian border and is a reserve “Pasvik”, an area of 14,687 hectares. It was created to preserve and study the most northern European pine forests, vast wetland of global significance lands, fauna, waterfowl and conduct comprehensive monitoring of northern ecosystems. Later, there lived Russian, Finns, Norwegians. This land was part of the Arkhangelsk province until 1918, then moved to Finland and returned to the Soviet Union after World War II. All of this leaves no doubt of the need for the existence of our specially protected natural territory “Pasvik”.
