Murmansk region entered the top three winners of the category “Russian Ecological recreation” of National Geographic Traveler Awards 2016 competition

Murmansk region took the 3rd place in the category “Russian Ecological holidays” competition National Geographic Traveler Awards 2016 winner losing only 4%, and ahead of such well-known tourist attraction centers as the Altai and Karelia. The places between the leaders were as follows: Vologda region (20%), the Republic of Crimea (18%), Murmansk region (16%). 15 regions of Russia participated in the vote on this nomination.

Primordial nature of the Arctic each year attracts thousands of tourists to the territory of the Kola Peninsula, three quarters of which is forested. Every year up to 15 thousand people come to the protected areas of the region. This year, experts estimated the interest in this area in the Murmansk region increased by 10%. A special place in the tourist visits to the area list is established by the Government in 2014. The natural park “Fishermen and Middle Peninsula.” For the season 2015 the park was visited by more than 8000 tourists from Russia and abroad, according to the results of 2016 it is expected that the number of visiting Rybachy Peninsula and Middle exceed 10 thousand people.

Competition for the best tourist destinations among the most popular forms of recreation in 2016 was organized by the popular magazine National Geographic Traveler. Online voting for the various categories held until November 6, 2016.
