According to the National Tourist rating, compiled by the Center of Information Communications “Rating” together with the magazine “Rest in Russia” Murmansk region came in the second group of regions with a tourist attraction and confirmed the status of the territory with great tourism potential. Kola Arctic confident ahead of other regions of the Russian Arctic for the second year in a row.
In absolute terms the region rose by 5 positions and came close to a group of leaders. The representatives of the expert community noted that Murmansk is gaining popularity among Chinese travelers. The uniqueness of the Arctic capital is manifested in everything – it is the world’s largest city of the Arctic Circle and the last city which was founded in the Russian Empire a century ago.
Special environmental conditions of the Russian Arctic are endless tundra, steep mountain slopes, the northern lights are attracted romantically-minded tourists. In winter, the sky is painted on the Murman colored lights – this is the famous “Polar lights” or the Northern Lights. Due to the unique conditions of the Russian Arctic from late November to mid-May Khibiny mountains and hills of the Kola Polar region are ready to receive guests from all over Russia and the world.
Sea port of Murmansk is the only ice-free Arctic port of the country, capable to accomodate ships in operation year-round navigation. Despite to the fact that tourism in the Arctic has the character of exclusivity, Murmansk region is quite popular amoung tourists – in 2015, the number of tourists was 305.4 thousand tourists, including 27.9 thousand foreign tourists.
