“In winter, the Northern Lights are not turned off, and in the summer the sun is turned on,” said John Woren about our land. Our land is located in such a point of the earth, where you can observe two amazing phenomena – the Polar Day and the Polar Night.
Today, July 22, the Polar Day ended in Murmansk. It came on May 22 and for two months the sun was around the clock above the horizon. Day and night it was light!
.POLAR DAY – the time period of the year when the Sun does not go beyond the horizon. On the polar circles of the Earth it lasts one day, at higher latitudes its duration increases, reaching a maximum of 186 days at the poles.
This phenomenon is associated with the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle is an imaginary line encircling the North Pole. On this line, once a year there is a polar day and once a polar night, and north of the Polar Circle their duration increases.
POLAR NIGHT – a period of time longer than a day, when there is no sun in the sky. Polar night in Murmansk will last 41 days (02.12 – 11.01)
